Smart Cities

A smart city is an urban development vision to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet of things (IoT) technology in a secure fashion to manage a city’s assets. Ultimately, a smart city optimizes city functions and powers economic growth in order to improve both the quality of government services and citizen welfare.

The L.A. region—like it did with streetcars and freeways—is spearheading a third transformation driven by the guiding principles of smart cities. L.A. was an early adopter of the data-driven, metrics-based management approach that is essential to smart cities. The region is also making the boldest, most comprehensive investment in transportation infrastructure anywhere in North America. We know our region will be reshaped as the era of smart cities is ushered in, but we must collectively engage in this transformation in order to ensure that it benefits policy makers, private industry, educational institutions and residents.
